Textile Trend forecasting - swatch project

The aim of this project was to predict upcoming trends for autumn/winter 2022 through textiles. A primary focus for me was drawing inspiration from nature and regrowth, I thought this was particularly important in a post covid world as many people around the world have fallen back in love with the outdoors. I took inspiration from decaying autumn leaves and spiralling cobwebs.

Mood Board

Recycled Leather from off cuts sewn together and hole punched.

Knitted and felted wool with cutting.

This piece was created by mixing black paint and latex and painting multiple layers onto cabbage leaves before peeling off.

Burning Calicco with a soldering iron.

Knitted Fair ilse with elastic creating a raised effect.

Plant Based Leather- I grew my own plant based leather by using a kombucha scoby. Kombucha is a fermented tea with live cultures. In order to create this leather I made this tea with sugar and black tea leaves and left to ferment for around 2 months. The scoby started to form around the 2 week mark and grew to the proportions of the container which was a perfect size for this swatch. When the scoby is dried is loses around 80 percent of its weight from evaporation. It then dries and shrinks to form a plant leather.

3D printing on Tulle.
